As NIU's Graduate Catalog ( NIU, 2023b) emphasizes, research misconduct includes "falsification of data, improper assignment of authorship, claiming another person's work as one's own, unprofessional manipulation of experiments or of research procedures, misappropriation of research funds". Good academic work is expected not only in classroom activities, but also in research and related activities. The University of Maryland defines academic dishonesty as committing or facilitating cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, or self-plagiarism. Students are responsible for plagiarism, intentional or not, if they copy material from books, magazines, or other sources without identifying and acknowledging those sources or if they paraphrase ideas from such sources without acknowledging them. The article maps the main strands of research on academic integrity by reference to teaching, research and service using 115 articles derived from both western and Chinese literature. Students are considered to have cheated if they copy the work of another during an examination or turn in a paper or an assignment written, in whole or in part, by someone else. Students need to understand that acknowledging sources allows them to make the conversation visible in the pages of their writing. Promoting honesty in academic work requires understanding the definition of academic dishonesty, its different types, and its causes and consequences.Īccording to NIU's undergraduate and graduate catalogs ( NIU, 2023b), The attempt of any student to present as his or her own work that which he or she has not produced is regarded by the faculty and administration as a serious offense.
